Why navy blue is the standard for business

By Alastair Graham, Managing Director·December 5, 2024·3 min read

When we launched Thistrict in 2017, we had to make a choice about our visual identity. Most firms go for black cars because it is the safe option, but we chose Aristocratic Blue for our 34 vehicles to set a different standard.

The problem with the funeral car look

Most executive car companies buy black cars because it is the easy choice at the dealership. We spent three days at the Edinburgh Airport arrivals hall in February 2017 watching people try to find their drivers. We noticed a recurring problem. Executives were walking up to four or five different black cars before finding the right one. Many of those cars were standard private hire taxis. It was a messy start to a business trip. We decided right then that Thistrict would be different. Our 34 cars needed to be a beacon for our clients.

Aristocratic Blue provides a clear distinction. It is dark enough to be formal but bright enough to be distinct. When one of our drivers stands at the terminal with a tablet, the client can see the car behind them and know it is a Thistrict vehicle. It removes that awkward moment of checking number plates. For the 83 accounts we managed last year, this saved an average of 12 minutes per pickup. It sounds small, but when you have a 9:00 AM meeting on Princes Street, those minutes matter.

Practicality in the Edinburgh rain

The weather in Scotland is hard on cars. Between the rain in October and the salt used on the roads in January, keeping a car looking clean is a battle. Black cars are the hardest to maintain. They show 'traffic film'—that grey layer of grime—within minutes of leaving the car wash. Our blue paint has a different reflective quality. It masks the light dusting of road grime better than black or silver. This means when we deliver a car to you in 55 minutes, it looks like it just rolled out of the showroom, even if it had to drive through a drizzle to get to you.

We follow a strict 14-step cleaning process for every vehicle. This includes a high-pressure rinse to remove salt from the wheel arches and a hand-dry with microfibre cloths. We found that black cars required twice as much polishing to remove water spots. By using blue, we reduced our prep time by 19% without lowering our standards. This efficiency is how we guarantee that a car is ready at the terminal exactly when your flight lands. We currently handle about 156 handovers a month with a team of 5 valeters who know every inch of this paintwork.

The psychology of a sensible choice

Navy blue has long been associated with the financial and legal sectors in Edinburgh. It is the colour of a well-tailored suit. When you arrive at a firm on Charlotte Square in a navy car, it feels appropriate. It is not flashy or loud. It does not shout for attention like a bright white or red car might. Instead, it suggests that the person inside is there for business. We have found that this resonates particularly well with our clients in the legal sector, who make up 23% of our active accounts.

Our paint choice also helps with heat regulation. While not a massive issue in Scotland, on the rare 24-degree days in July, black cars become ovens. Our blue cars stay approximately 4 degrees cooler inside when parked in direct sunlight. This means the air conditioning doesn't have to work as hard when you first get in. It is a small detail, but it makes the first 5 minutes of your journey much more comfortable. We also use a ceramic coating that was applied to all 34 cars in Q1 2024 to protect the finish from bird lime and sap.

Fleet uniformity and brand trust

There is a psychological comfort in knowing exactly what you are getting. If you book a car with us today, and then book another one for a colleague in three weeks, they will be identical. We do not use stickers, we do not use third-party ads, and we do not have different colours. This level of consistency is rare for a small firm with only 9 staff members. Most rental companies buy whatever is available on the lot. We factory-order our vehicles to ensure the paint match is 99.6% accurate across the entire fleet.

This commitment to a single colour has helped us build a recognisable brand in the city. When people see an Aristocratic Blue car with a clean, unbranded exterior moving through the West End, they know it is a Thistrict car. It has become a silent badge of quality. Last year, 67% of our new business came from people seeing our cars at corporate events and asking who they belonged to. We don't need big signs on the doors. The colour and the condition of the car do the talking for us.

Visual identity at night

Edinburgh is a city of shadows and yellow streetlights. At night, black cars can almost disappear into the background. This can be a safety concern during the long winter nights when the sun sets at 3:30 PM. Navy blue maintains a slight silhouette even in low light. It reflects the orange glow of the city lamps in a way that makes the car's dimensions easier to judge for other drivers. We have noticed that our fleet has had 31% fewer minor scuffs during night-time hours compared to the industry average for executive fleets.

We also spec our cars with high-intensity LED headlights and puddle lamps that project a soft light onto the ground when the door opens. This light hits the blue paint and creates a welcoming environment for the passenger. It is part of the 'ready at the terminal' experience we promise. Whether it is a dark Tuesday morning in November or a bright Friday in June, the visual impact of the car remains consistent. We even checked the interior lighting to ensure it complements the exterior shade, choosing a soft white over a harsh blue or yellow.
